. well now to the escalating darn knowledge in syria. the new commander of rebel forces there says he is, quote: very afraid. that if cornered the government will use deadly chemical weapons on its own people. really he should know. this vicious civil war in syria has been raging for two years. civil rights activists claim more than 40,000 people have been killed. observers say the number could be much higher as both sides may be hiding the true numbers of casualties to give the appearance that each is winning. that rebel commander recently gave a rare interview to the associated press. in it, he claims that he has to move constantly to avoid government spies. he also claims to have 120,000 fighters under his command but is he asking for western military assistance. warning the war could continue for months. at the same time, there is word syria's interior minister was seriously wounded in a bomb attack last week. of syria. nbc's chief foreign correspondent richard engel and his crew disappeared thursday after crossing into northwest syria from turkey. this morning he told the "today" show how they were all finally set free. >> at the end of this, we were being moved to yet another location in the later around 11:00 last night local time and as we were moving along the road the kidnappers came across a rebel checkpoint, something they hadn't expected so we were in the back of what you'd think of as a mini van and as we were driving along the road the kidnappers saw this checkpoint, started a gun fight with it. two of the kidnappers were killed, they climbed out of the vehicle and the rebels took us. we spent the night with them, we didn't get much sleep. >> ivan watson joins us from istanbul, turkey. ivan, who were these kidnappers and why did they take me see journalists? >> well, according to richard engel's statement this was a shabiha pro-government militia made up of shiite muslims and it gives you a sense of how chaotic the situation has gotten inside syria. we were hearing about clashes betwe

to see maybe eventually total of 4 to 6 feet of snow across the syria nevadas. more snow. next storm moving in by tomorrow afternoon. this storm eventually is going to move out across parts of the plains. take a look at this. this right here is the cold air that's going to be in place monday morning, christmas eve morning. that starts to dive down in towards parts of the southern plains by tuesday. so christmas day, this is precipitation where that blue is. that's potentially snow across places like oklahoma and arkansas. a snow storm christmas day on -- oklahoma and arkansas. by wednesday, this pulls out off towards the northeast, and then we're potentially talking about a december 26th people out shopping. people trying to get back home. and we're looking at possibly a big snow storm across parts of the ohio valley. eventually in towards the northeast. weather it is snow across the coast or rain on the coast, little bit too early to say. but it's possibly right now looking like big snow across interior sections. parts of pennsylvania, upstate new york. and that could have some very
